I’m 44 years old and I’ve been bicycling for a few decades. At the beginning of this, I didn’t think that ever-changing conditions would make me any slower or less comfortable on my bike. I also had never experienced anything like a specific part of the bicycle that got in my way, so sometimes it was very easy to get stuck in traffic and not know where you were going because you’re constantly checking your phone on the go. But now when I am riding through new places, different streets, different destinations…I have a more clear picture of where things are. Sometimes I just want to look at what’s ahead without being distracted too much by other things. So most of these days when I’m biking alone around town with no other trail users beside me or stopping for gas or taking pictures, my simple thoughts about commuting is “what if there’s an accident here? What if someone sees me and can’t help but try to help?” instead of “why am I doing this?” It always seems easier when there is no one else around who wants to tell me that something happened.
